66th Annual Golden Globe Awards on NBC

Award season is upon us – the time for Hollywood to collectively pat itself on the back for the fine work it has bestowed upon the world in the past year…from sadistic comic-book villains to masochistic ex-wrestlers.  Each year millions of viewers tune in for the gowns, the glitz and the glamour.  One aspect of the awards shows that has become an annual ritual of sorts is the acceptance speech.  Which self-absorbed celebrity will say or do something offensive?  This year, that distinction went to Darren Aronofsky, the celebrated director of The Wrestler.  For airing his obscene gesture as well as other expletives, NBC’s January 11th broadcast at 8:00 p.m. ET of the 66th Annual Golden Globes has been named Worst TV Show of the Week.

NBC rated the awards show TV-PG DL, meaning that the network felt the show was appropriate for most children though it contained some suggestive dialogue and mild swearing. Unfortunately, for those parents tuning in with their kids, this was hardly the case.  Some of the presenters offered some off-color humor:

Ricky Gervais lamented his failed campaign to garner nominations for his film, Ghost Town.  “What a waste of a campaign,” he quipped, “That is the last time I have sex with 200 middle-aged journalists.  It was horrible, really.  A lot of them didn't speak English.  Europeans with wispy beards … the men were worse.”

When Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks present they make a drug reference:

Seth Rogen: “It is a true honor to finally be presenting here at the Golden Globes, although honestly, I wish I got to do this a long time ago in a different era in Hollywood, maybe like the 80s. That way, instead of being drunk with Mickey Rourke tonight, I'd be doing cocaine with Mickey Rourke tonight.”

Elizabeth Banks: “You did do cocaine with Mickey Rourke tonight.”

Seth Rogen:  “I know I did, a lot of it, but it's just not the same.”

Some of the clips were poorly chosen as well.  In a clip for HBO’s sex-filled program Californication, David Duchovny was shown getting a vasectomy:

David Duchovny:  “Why do you look like a welder. You're not welding anything. Are you?”

Aide:  “So why the vasectomy?”

David Duchovny:  “I hate the rubbers.”

Aid:  Yeah, me too.  Can't feel a damn thing.

Doctor:  “Try not to get a hard-on. That would be messy.”

David Duchovny:  “Looks like there's a new pope.”

But the evening’s coup de grace came during Mickey Rourke’s  rambling, profanity-ridden speech, during which he thanked his agent, his director and sundry others:

“I want to thank David Unger for having the balls…Darren [Aronofsky] is one of those cats, and he brought the best out of me, and he hates it when I say he's tough, he is one tough son of a bitch …I'd like to thank also  somebody who broke his balls a lot, he was the producer, Scott Franklin.”

Darren Aronofsky responded to Rourke’s salute with a salute of his own, making an obscene one-fingered gesture.  Aronofsky’s gesture was aired unblurred in the East Coast, though the West Coast feed was censored.  While the PTC commends NBC for editing that segment, NBC should have been more honest with its ratings.  With the Oscars just around the corner, hopefully the artists will save everyone the trouble, show a little respect for the viewers, and censor themselves.

For sexually-charged clips, offensive language, and one obscene gesture the 66th Annual Golden Globes has been named Worst TV Show of the Week.
